►►►NEW 2012◄◄◄ FIREFIGHTER ENDURANCE CHALLENGE Think you’re tough? Here’s your chance to prove it! Designed as a friendly, but spirited competition to find out who’s the most physically fit firefighter in southern WV and eastern KY. Dressed in full PPE contestants will be in an all- out race against the clock to see who can complete the 7 station battlefield of exercises designed to simulate typical fire ground activities. Equipment Needed: Full PPE w/SCBA. Competition in Individual and 2 Member Teams. No entry fee. Competition takes place at the Williamson Fire Department at 6 pm. |
| Friday Only Class Number: 101 CPR / AED This course will provide firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement officers or anyone who has already been trained to perform CPR a review of the major procedures. Students will learn how CPR works, when CPR should be performed, and how to properly perform CPR. An AED instruction will be provided as well. This course is a refresher course for re-certification only. WV firefighter requirement. Instructor: Joey Carey (Lt. Williamson FD, EMT-P); Doug Goolsby (EMT-P) Pre-Requisites: None Equipment Needed: None Class Number: 102 HIGHWAY SAFETY FOR EMERGENCY RESPONDERS {JR FF approved} Too many “struck-by” injuries and deaths are occurring to emergency first responders on the scene of highway and roadway incidents. Whether they are due to improper lighting, improper positioning of apparatuses and vehicles, or simply a lack of basic understanding of your role and responsibility, this class has the answer to all the above. You will learn valuable techniques designed to help you set up a good visible command post and establish a safe working environment for everyone involved in the work zone of theses all too frequent highway/roadway incidents Instructor: Paul Gill (WVSFMO Ret., Deputy Chief Institute VFD) Pre-Requisites: None Equipment Needed: None Saturday ONLY {1 day classes} Class Number: 206 FOAM “The Fire Service’s Voodoo Science” (Saturday Only) This class will assist students in gaining a basic understanding of the requirements for practices and procedures to select and apply firefighting foam. Discussions include the various types of foam concentrate and how firefighting foam behaves on various fuels. Students will work on scenarios that involve various foam solution concentrations and application rates for different fuels. This is a must do class for all firefighters. Plastics) Pre-Requisites: None Equipment Needed: None Class Number: 207 CPR and FIRST AID {JR FF approved} (Saturday Only) Students will learn critical skills needed to respond to and manage an emergency such as, choking or sudden cardiac arrest, and providing CPR in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills such as how to treat cardiac arrest, use AED, control bleeding, splinting broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. Instructor: Doug Goolsby (EMT-P, Instructor) Pre-Requisites: None Equipment Needed: None Class Number: 208 CRIME SCENE DOCUMENTATION (Saturday Only) This is an 8-hour training program designed to equip the road patrol officer with the knowledge to properly document a crime scene. The student will learn basic photography, how to obtain measurements and complete a diagram of a crime/incident scene. Instructor: Doug Beasley (Sergeant Kanawha County Sheriff Department) Pre-Requisites: None Equipment Needed: None LET 8 hours in service approved Class Number: 212 HIGH TECH VEHICLES - HYBRIDS, FUEL CELLS, AND AIRBAGS (Saturday Only) Are your members aware of the unique dangers surrounding these electric vehicles and how to minimize the risks to both themselves and victims? Some estimates place 5.5 million hybrids with nearly 50 different models on the road today. Students will learn of the dangers surrounding these vehicles and how to minimize the risk. With an in depth look at the technology in hybrids to the correct response procedures, this course covers everything you need to operate safely and effectively around these types of vehicles. Instructor: Steve Sullivan (AMKUS Technician) Pre-Requisites: None Sunday ONLY {1 day classes} Class Number: 209 FUNDAMENTALS of ROPE RESCUE AND RIGGING (Sunday Only) Don’t think for a minute this is a simple rope class or a repeat of anything you’ve already had. Two new knots and hauling systems that were introduced to the fire service for the first time at ESCAPE in February will be taught in this class. Rigging a basket liter for evacuation, patient packaging, lowering, and hauling are just a few of the skills that students will learn . Instructor: Ross Neff (Chief Ret., G.E. Plastics) Pre-Requisites: None Equipment Needed: None Class Number: 210 METH LAB AWARENESS FOR EMERGENCY RESPONDERS (Sunday Only) Clandestine meth labs are becoming more and more present in our communities and the dangers involved in these labs make responder knowledge essential. This 8-hour training program is designed to equip emergency responders with the knowledge you’ll need to properly identify the hazards involved with clandestine methamphetamine labs and the appropriate actions to take when one is encountered. Instructor: Doug Beasley (Sergeant Kanawha County Sheriff Department) Pre-Requisites: None Equipment Needed: None LET 8 hours in service approved Class Number: 211 MASS CASUALTY INCIDENT (Sunday Only) This class is an overview of triage. It will involve identifying actions before, during, and after an MCI event. The student will be able to classify victims of an MCI, prepare areas for triage, treatment, and transportation, and make transport decisions for victims of an MCI. This course meets all the requirements of the WVOEMS for recertification. But is everyone knowledgeable of the most recent updates to the system? | Saturday and Sunday (2 Day Classes) Class Number: 201 HEAVY, HEAVY RESCUE NO! This is not the same Heavy Rescue class from last year. This advanced extrication class with all new scenarios is designed to allow responders to work together as a team on complex situations and learn new skills. Advanced lifting techniques with air bags, advanced stabilization and cribbing, combined with advanced shoring and rigging will definitely present a challenge to all students. Large trucks, buses, and heavy equipment, in conjunction with precarious entrapment situations will definitely make this an unforgettable experience. Course exceeds NFPA 1670 Standards for Technical Rescue and Extrication Instructor: Paul Niedbalski Jr. (Charleston FD), Darin Virag (Charleston FD), Steve Cavander (Point Pleasant FD) Pre-Requisites: Advanced Vehicle Rescue or Operations Level Extrication Equipment Needed: PPE and Eye Protection Class Number: 202 AUTO EXTRICATION AWARENESS and OPERATIONS This class emphasizes the basics of vehicular rescue including size-up, patient assessment and patient stabilization, disentanglement, patient packaging and safe removal. The standard extrication tools used along with instruction on developing sound rescue principles that are applied to any rescue needed to reach a favorable outcome will be highlighted. Pre-Requisites: None Equipment Needed: Full PPE and Eye Protection Class Number: 203 EMERGENCY VEHICLE DRIVER TRAINING This course is a combination classroom and practical skills training involving the safe operation of emergency type vehicles. Driver responsibility and safety, inspection, and the legal aspects of emergency vehicle operation are covered in this class. This class meets the WV State Fire Commission and State EMS initial driver requirements. It is recommended that you bring the apparatus or vehicle from your department that you typically drive. Instructor: James Roberts (Wharton Barrett VFD, VFIS Instructor) Equipment Needed: Vehicle, Driver’s License Class Number: 204 BASIC STRUCTURAL FIREFIGHTING FOR NEW RECRUITS and JUNIOR FIREFIGHTERS {JR FF approved} Back by popular demand this class will cover basic engine company skills with lots of hands-on use of all fire ground tools and equipment. This class will also provide the student with the general knowledge of how a fire department operates on a day to day basis. Instructor: Joey Carey (Lt. Williamson FD, EMT-P); Pre-Requisites: None Class Number: 205 SEARCH AND RESCUE FOR THE INITIAL RESPONDER Designed for firefighters, EMS, and other emergency personnel who may be the initial responders to a Lost Person Incident. The course objective is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate such an incident and take appropriate initial actions. Lost person behavior, search planning and tactical operations are all presented. Specialized resources and their appropriate use are discussed.
